To Our Wine Aficionados,

Introduction

Greg, our 84 year old delivery guy, fell a few months ago and has been unable to figure out what he did to himself.  Things came to a head last week when he was suddenly unable to walk without severe pain.  He is trying to get the attention of his doctor, and we hope a diagnosis is soon forthcoming.  Meantime, the backup delivery guy had better finish writing this newsletter and get driving.

New Locations

The Latilla Room at the Boulders Resort, Carefree

I managed to get an introduction to the key people at this wonderful restaurant.  David Lucas was to supply wine to a convention of the Justice Institute, the organization that supported the opening up of the interstate shipping of wine.  David had been one of the plaintiffs who pled in the Supreme Court on this topic.  The Justice Institute was meeting at the Boulders, and I was the local wine distributor who brought in the wines.  So, given this inside track, I was sure I would soon be supplying David’s wines to the Boulders.  Let’s analyze that sentence carefully: “soon” – not exactly, I agreed to bring in the wines in March; “David’s wines” – not so far; “supplying … wines” – yes, Vino Noceto and Frank Family will soon be on the menu.

Corbin’s Bar & Grill, 8729 N Central Ave, Phoenix

By contrast, Rick at Red Kangaroo sold some wine to these guys and then handed it off to us to deal with.  Laurie and I visited the place recently for a beer, rather than arrive too soon for a nearby party.  The location is on the site of the old Mediterranean Club on Central Avenue south of Dunlap.  They razed the old building then raised the new one.  It’s one of those places with a friendly bar man and a comfortable menu that almost make you wish you still lived around the corner.

Rambling

No rambling this month, but lots of feedback.

Steve emailed me that Joe Walsh as the originator of the quotes I put at the end of the last rambling.  He asked if he won a prize I told him he would get a mention in the next newsletter.

Craig emailed me to warn me that the short cut through the Gila River Indian Reservation is well patrolled and so we should avoid taking advantage of the empty road.  The puppy would appreciate it too.

Dick visited Doug and Nancy Beckett, owners of the Peachy Canyon winery in Paso Robles, with a bottle of Young’s Barbera.  Doug was amazed that he had not heard of the wine – he expected that it would fair well in any ratings.  But Steven Young chooses not to participate in wine competitions, nor does he send bottles to the wine magazines.  Why should he when he sees a 2 mile backup down the road to Plymouth on release day.

And finally some closure on Laurie’s thyroid cancer.  She has had her thyroid removed and received the standard radioactive iodine treatment to destroy any remnants.  A scan showed little remaining thyroid tissue and none outside her neck.  She is now on thyroid hormone supplements and plans a 6 month checkup.  Hoorah, I think.

Ciao,

Richard and Laurie
