Best Wishes for a Happy Memorial Day

Introduction

In the introduction last month I talked about the Arizona law that allows restaurants to re-cork wine bottles for customers who would prefer to finish the bottle at home.  One suggestion that came back was that restaurants could put a note on their wine menus so that customers know upfront that it’s OK to buy a bottle with the intention of drinking only some of it.

During the first week of May half of the Orangewood Sales staff visited half of the wineries we represent during a 4 day tour.  Look for us to be re-energized in our enthusiasm for wine in general and those wineries in particular.

New Wineries

Apolloni Vineyards was founded in 1999 by Alfredo and Laurine Apolloni.  Alfredo, a first generation American, comes from a long line of Italian winemakers.  Their unique site in the Northern Willamette Valley provides the ideal climate for outstanding Pinot Noir.  We also think their Pinot Grigio is charming and are delighted to offer both in Arizona.

Kiwi Importers is an importer first and a wine importer second.  This means that they have only two wineries in their portfolio, both of which have Neill

Culley as managing partner and wine maker.  Culley Wines and Cable Bay are the two brands.  While Neill is based on a little island in a gulf on the north side of the north island (this was way beyond my high school NZ geography), much of the fruit he uses comes from the Marlborough region on the South Island.  We have brought in the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from both.

Rambling

I started to write about the trip we made to California and had in mind describing Jeep rides, boat rides, barrel tasting, vineyard explorations, the use of a saber as a champagne bottle opener and the proposal of marriage made during the trip; but it all got out of hand.  Instead I would like to thank all of the people we met during our visit; they were all a delight to visit and learn from.  I would like to give special thanks to David Girard who allowed us to stay at his newly renovated winery house adjacent to his eponymous vineyards.

Talking of marriage proposals, Xandria Duncan, who delivered wine to many of you before becoming a sales consultant, recently married Lou, who she met while loading wine at our warehouse.  We are delighted to have played a small role and wish them every happiness.
